Judge Samuel W. Dexter founded the settlement in 1824 as the 'Mill Creek Settlement,' damming the creek that same year to power a saw mill and, soon after, a grist mill; a woolen mill, basket factory, and cider mill followed before 1900. The village was platted and renamed Dexter in 1830.
