A River Town Straddling Two Counties
John Marvin, Bethuel Hack, and Harmon Allen founded Milan in 1831 along the Saline River, part of the River Raisin watershed; early settlers hoped wild grapes along the river would support a wine industry, which is how the town got its Italian namesake in 1836. Milan still straddles the Washtenaw-Monroe county line and became a Michigan city in 1967.
