A Mill Town Built Where Salt Springs Once Marked the River
Government surveyor Orange Risdon settled on the Saline River in April 1825 and built the community around salt springs French explorers had noted there in the 1600s -- the source of the town's name. Grist and flour mills followed through the 1830s and 40s, and the Saline Standard Windmill Manufacturing Co. was turning out windmills by 1875, all of it built along a working river.
