A Lake Named for an 1825 Surveyor
Surveyors Johnathon Stratton and Luke Whitmore came from the Ann Arbor settlement in 1825 and gave their name to the lake and the community that grew up around it; a post office opened in 1834 under the name Northfield before being renamed Whitmore Lake in 1854. The community has shifted over recent decades from summer cottages to year-round homes.
Waterproofing a Community Built Around Cottages
Because so many Whitmore Lake homes started as seasonal lake cottages rather than year-round construction, foundations and crawl spaces close to the shoreline often were never built to the same water-management standard as a typical inland house -- something worth checking before converting or renovating a former cottage into full-time use.
