Ypsilanti's Two Foundings on the Huron
Ypsilanti's first settlement, Woodruff's Grove, went up on the east bank of the Huron River in April 1823 -- the first settlement in Washtenaw County. When road surveyors platted a river crossing nearly a mile north in 1824, landowners Augustus Woodward, John Stewart, and William Harwood combined their land there in 1825 to found the townsite that took hold, named for Greek revolutionary general Demetrius Ypsilantis, while the original riverside settlement was eventually abandoned.
